CLASSWORK
I use a combination of gradual release model and Van De Walle's problem of the day. Three days a week I use gradual release and I teach a new strategy/step/concept. During this time I teach something new and model example problems. Then students volunteer to assist me to solve similar problems in front of the whole class. During this time we can discuss common mistakes and misconceptions. Finally, in the last stage of gradual release, student practice problems that are ungraded on their own and problems are reviewed at the end of the class period to ensure the concept is understood before moving on to the next step.
Two days a week students complete a problem of the day using Van De Walle's process including analyzing the text of the word problem and having 5 minutes of productive struggle. After 5 minutes students meet with their partner/group and discuss what they have discovered so far and continue solving the problem. Students will create an equation for the problem, show their work, draw a picture or organize the information visually, and write a 3 sentence reflection on the process and strategies they used to solve the problem.
TECHNOLOGY
Students use technology daily in math. Each class period begins with morning work on Pearson. The morning work consists of 3-5 questions reviewing a previously taught concept. The concept could be something taught a few days, weeks, or months ago. This method encourages spiral review. This year I also have a 3 month trial license for ST Math. ST Math is an intervention program that allows students to use manipulatives on the computer to solve equations. Students also use iStation Math monthly to evaluate their skills and weekly to practice new concepts.
MATH HOMEWORK
Math homework is given every Thursday and it is due on Wednesday. Math homework is given in a pack with Math and Science together. It is done this way so that students who have extra curricular activities are able to manage their time with their families so that they can choose the best night to complete their homework.
